Visitor Visa

If you are planning a visit to Canada, the first thing you should know is to dress for the weather! It’s all about layers in this country. Aside from the appropriate attire, you may require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), often called a Visitor’s Visa.

A visitor visa is an immigration document that allows foreign nationals to travel to and enter Canada. Unless you are from a visa-exempt country, you will need a visitor visa to enter Canada whether you are coming as a student, temporary worker, or simply to visit.

Who Needs a Visitor Visa

Everyone who wants to enter Canada who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or Person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act , or otherwise visa-exempt, requires a visitor visa. Canadian permanent residents are not permitted to apply for a visitor visa, even if their permanent resident card has expired. They must instead apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD). Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, are also not permitted to apply for a visitor visa. They must be travelling on a valid Canadian passport. If you are transiting through or coming to Canada for business, not as a temporary foreign worker, you may need a business visitor visa.

A visitor visa may be for single entry or multiple entry use. Single-entry visas may be issued up to six months before the expected date of travel. The maximum validity date for multiple entry visitor visas is up to ten (10) years or one month prior to the expiry date on the passport/re-entry visa, whichever is earlier. POE officers will routinely grant entry for a period of six months to a person requesting entry as a visitor.
